Read for a fun getaway close to the city that feels miles away from home? We stayed in Running Springs, a gateway city to Lake Arrowhead and Big Bear and it was perfect. Aside from it being a charming little town, It is there where we have found some adorable and cozy cabins. Running Springs is perfectly located to lots of great dining options, hiking trails and even snow fun if visiting during the winter. If you are looking to have a family or romantic getaway weekend in the mountains, I'll share some fun things you can do in the area.
Where To Stay
The previous cabin we stayed in is no longer available, however I've linked an Airbnb link where you can find several links in the area
Things To Do In Running Springs
This fun trail fit for all ages was just a quick 8 min drive from the cabin. The trail is almost 1 mile long and there's so much to see and appreciate. On arrival we picked up a free map that explained the type of trees we were looking at as well as other unique forest finds. You will find numeric posts that are clearly marked throughout the trail that make it very easy to follow along on the map. The trail is shady, easy, and there are even some picnic tables to enjoy a picnic or snack with the family. Entrance is absolutely free but you do require a parking pass that you can buy at any of the local stores or buy from the Arboretum booth on the weekends for $5.00.
This trail was a little bit further but absolutely worth the drive. It was a scenic 24 minute drive that allowed us to enjoy more of the nearby towns. The lake and trail was absolutely gorgeous. The lake is surrounded by a cool cedar and pine forest that allowed for some stunning views all around. The 2.3 mile dirt trail goes all around the lake and is an easy trail fit for all ages. During our walk we saw people fishing, walking their dogs, painting and having picnics around many of the picnic tables found around the lake. It's called a fitness trail because there are station activities throughout the whole trail for those looking to get an extra little workout. We saw some inflatables being set up in the water and a huge built in slide. We learned from a local hiker that during the summer it's a beautiful place for some water fun for the whole family. We are definitely looking forward to visiting again once it warms up. Parking is $10 max/day but access to the trail is absolutely free.
Places To Eat
1. Blondies Grille & Bar- After settling in we decided to explore the town and grab a late lunch. We didn't want to drive far and found this restaurant just a 6 min drive away from the cabin. It is a cute cabin style restaurant that had several locals sitting at the bar. Everyone including the employees were very welcoming and warm...we immediately felt at home. We were starving and everything sounded delicious but we went with a corn chowder soup, Tri Tip parmesan crusted sourdough sandwich, a Malibu chicken sandwich with their special sauce and hot turkey plate. To say we were impressed is an understatement. We honestly didn't expect for the food to be so tasty. The portions were fairly large but most importantly everything was delicious. From now on this will be a must visit anytime we come up the mountain.
2. Hortencias At The Cliffhanger- This restaurant had been in our list for a while now so we diverted a bit from the cabin, about 26 min to be exact, to stop and finally pay a visit. This Mexican restaurant has the most incredible views! Food was tasty with large portions and their Michelada was equally tasty and large. They views are equally great from the inside or their outdoor patio. There's some fun history surrounding the restaurant you can read up on when visiting. Definitely worth a stop!
Snack are always a must and we found this market just 5 minutes from the cabin. We actually found a lot more than just snacks. They have a full meat market, deli department, fresh fruits and veggies, alcohol and more. Fully stocked and conveniently close by.
Conclusion
We had the best time during our beautiful mountain getaway in Running Springs.
