We don't get to play in snow very often here in Souther California, so when it snows in surrounding areas you will see most families head out to the mountains. We were not the exception and decided to take a drive up to Big Bear in search of some snow fun, before the storm arrived. On our drive up to Big Bear we came across this great little trail that served as a FREE play and sledding area. I want to share this great option to save you some money and driving time.
We packed up our snow gear and headed up the mountain to Big Bear. Being a weekday, we learned that all the snow play/sledding areas we would usually visited were closed and they only took online reservations Friday-Monday. Our next options was driving and seeing what we could find. I like to be prepared so this wasn't the ideal option but appeared to be the only one at the time. While searching for some snow play areas, we read we would need a recreation pass to park in some areas in Big Bear when snow is present, so we decided to stop and purchase one at GreenSpot Market for only $5.00. We started driving up the mountain and kept our eyes open for some good areas. We didn't want to drive all the way up to Big Bear since it was a day trip and were hoping to find something closer. As we were driving, we came across this area, Whispering Pines Nature trail. There was parking right in front of the trail and we saw two cars parked with families playing in the area...we had found our spot!!!
Just as we had read all cars parked did need to have a parking pass displayed so definitely glad we got one. We were able to build a snowman, have our own sledding play area , while saving us a good amount of money and a good 30 minutes of driving. Make sure you bring water, snacks, and a sled. In addition to our snow saucer sled we brought a boogie board and that worked perfectly. We also built a snow girl, named snowflake! You can see the whole process of how we built her in our Youtube video down below. I added a time lapse clip of how we made her.

Hope this helps you plan your day a bit better! We went during the week but I can imagine during the weekend it must get crowded specially if it's just snowed, so arrive early. Have fun!
